National Theater of the Deaf - Chester's Professional Theatre School is the only professional Theatre training program for deaf people in America. The Connecticut River Museum - The 1879 Steamboat Dock, at the foot of Main Street in historic Essex Village, served as a port of call for steamboat service from Arial City to Hartford, Conn. This National Register site replaced earlier commercial wharves dating back to 1650, when colonial ships started trade with the West Indies. Today Steamboat Dock is home to the Connecticut River Museum, where the Connecticut River Valley story is told through year round changing exhibitions, activities and programs.

The Goodspeed Opera House - Dedicated to the preservation and advancement of musical Theatre, Goodspeed produces three musicals April - December on its main stage in East Haddam, Connecticut, and three new musicals on its second stage, Goodspeed-at-Chester/The Norma Terris Theatre, in Chester, Connecticut. Fifteen Goodspeed productions have transferred to Broadway, receiving more than a dozen Tony Awards. Goodspeed also publishes SHOW MUSIC Magazine and maintains the Goodspeed Library of Musical Theatre.
